Marketers, Let's Talk: Pinterest Is Not A Social Network - Forrester

The reality is that Pinterest is not a place for customers to engage with brands like they do on other social networks. Rather, Pinterest is better suited for discovery and for helping consumers find information, ideas, products, and services. Marketers know to go to Google to increase their brands' visibility and awareness but don't think about Pinterest in the same way —  and that's a mistake. Don't get us wrong; we're not saying that Pinterest is the next Google. But Pinterest is taking steps that make it more Google-like with its intent-based search and auctioned-based ad pricing, all while maintaining vestiges of a social network.

Pinterest’s ad tech evolution took a big step forward Tuesday when it rolled out new targeting tools and first-party data matching.
Pinterest hopes to “massively expand the categories for interest targeting” from 30 to 420, said product manager Nipoon Malhotra, who leads the company’s monetization team.

And with its CRM data matching capability, Pinterest is following Google (which debuted CRM matching last year) as well as Facebook/Instagram and Twitter.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud adds new tools to help brands market on Pinterest - VentureBeat | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
The Salesforce Marketing Cloud now has an integration with Pinterest, which the companies say will allow marketers to make “pinners” (Pinterest users) part of their overall digital marketing plans.

A new set of tools becomes available to help marketers connect with customers on Pinterest using Salesforce’s Social Studio social media marketing platform. The tools will allow companies to “compose, preview, schedule and publish Pins across Pinterest accounts as part of a broader multi-channel social strategy,” the companies said in a statement.

Using Social Studio’s analytics functions, Pinterest marketers can tag and track pins so that they know which pins end up leading to sales.

The integration creates a way to track pins and social activity on Pinterest and funnel the data to the CRM or other marketing automation tools.

Just a few months ago, Pinterest took a big step forward in its utility for businesses by providing free access to its own suite of analytics tools. I’ve excitedly dug in to understand the new data and am now even more convinced that Pinterest is the first social media channel made for marketing.

 

Insight 1: Viral Nature of Pinterest Turbo-Charges Reach

The first test revealed that the average reach per follower on Pinterest is 12.2 over a 30-day period. That means that, on average, a brand’s followers saw 12.2 of that brand’s pins during this 30-day period.

 

Insight 2: Click-Through Is Close To Search Results

Data across 1.1 billion impressions resulted in an average click-through rate of 1.1%. That’s an incredibly strong number that blows away click-through rates of banners ads, which hover around 0.1%. Note that a click-through on Pinterest is a tougher “double click rate” because it takes one click to highlight an image on Pinterest, and a second click to leave for a website.


CYDigital's insight:

Not a big proponent of Pinterest for B2B, but these stats are compelling and tough to ignore (albeit B2C oriented). But there's always a first mover advantage for enterprising B2B marketers. Will it work for you? Test, test, test.
