Chatbots and the rise of conversational marketing - Marketing Tech News

In a survey of Fortune 500 marketing professionals carried out by LiveWorld, 52% of respondents thought that advances in technology would allow them to engage in meaningful two-way conversations with their customers. Social media, messaging apps and, in particular, chatbots are seen as effective tools to usher in ‘conversational marketing’.

Conversational marketing is the shift away from brands trying to dictate to customers how to think and feel about products and services. Instead, through the use of chatbots, auto-responders and tech that integrates live agents, brands can actually converse with their customers in real-time, leading to personalised experiences and lots of lovely data on consumer intentions and behaviours.

Two types of bots will be used most of the time, said HubSpot CMO Kipp Bodnar in a presentation outlining the coming integration. One, a utility bot, will help do recurring tasks, such as research, like Facebook's GIPHY bot that suggests animated GIFs to go with messages and posts; the other, transactional bots, expire when a transaction is complete, such as a package tracker rendered irrelevant once an order is delivered.

This starts with Facebook Messenger chatbots because that's where everyone is, he explained, and because the integration is tight.

People yearn for human interaction and relationships. The key to chatbot success is for brands to find a way to equip bots with the ability to seamlessly transition from a chatbot to a human, in the middle of a customer interaction, with the conversational context to avoid customer frustration.

“While chatbots can serve as an efficient way to offer customers solutions to their problems, their future success will depend on how thoughtfully brands leverage them to meet customers’ needs. After all, delivering a great customer experience depends on it,” says Kristopher Arcand, a Forrester Data Analyst.

The fact is that most chatbots aren’t intelligent. They are built based on decision-tree logic, where the bot response depends on specific keywords identified in the user’s input. Bots with linguistic and natural language learning capabilities are still quite rare.

HubSpot Co-Founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah thinks chatbots are the "biggest wave" of technology innovation in the past two decades. 

At the company's annual INBOUND conference yesterday at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center here, he championed the marketing and sales automation provider's GrowthBot.

Shah said the chatbots will connect marketers and sales teams to HubSpot's GrowthBot, which will marry artificial intelligence and machine learning with existing HubSpot's systems like customer relationship management (CRM).
