Time to buy: New gTLDs won’t get cheaper! - SEMrush

Time to buy: New gTLDs won’t get cheaper! - SEMrush | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
The new top domain names also offer new possibilities: A new opportunity to communicate the brand to everyone, a new opportunity to inspire the company employees, a new opportunity to show your company's authority in the market, etc.

Now is the time to secure your new exact match keyword gTLD domain names cheaply. Focus on your primary money keywords and buy them now before prices go up, or your competitors beat you to the finish line. New gTLDs are here to stay and it is commercially illogical not to prepare for the future if your company is doing well and is growing.
CYDigital/marteq.io's insight:

Be very careful with country domains and the registrar. Not all registrars are the same...some will hold you money for months.

Beyond .COM, .ORG & .NET: A Beginner's Guide to Brand Top-Level Domains - HubSpot | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
A digital paradigm shift is underway with the expansion of the domain name space. And it's important to remember that we are in the very early days of this. As the next round is processed, the domain name space will only continue to expand.

A Brand TLD serves as an effective way to secure a brand’s place in this increasingly complex digital ecosystem, where consumers demand authentic and trusted web properties to transact with businesses.

A Brand TLD is not just another domain like your current flagship URL. It is also not just another tool to build a website and engage with audiences. Brand TLDs provide a platform to increase digital trust and innovation at the root of the internet’s infrastructure.

Can moving to a new TLD boost search rankings? - Marketing Land

Can moving to a new TLD boost search rankings? - Marketing Land | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
One of the big questions in SEO today is how new TLDs (top-level domains), like .LIVE, .NEWS or .ATTORNEY are affecting search engine rankings. While some believe that .COM domains are the only safe option, Google has insisted that generic top-level domains aren’t at any disadvantage in their search rankings’ algorithm. Rather than accept either of these statements at face value, we wanted to know, what does the data say?

That’s why we commissioned Globe Runner, a Dallas-based SEO firm, to investigate the effect of moving from a .COM to a new TLD. The subject of this study was Jacksonville.ATTORNEY, a domain registered by Eric Block, a personal injury attorney in Jacksonville, FL. Eric’s migration from EricBlockLaw.com in March of 2015 was a great opportunity to observe domain metrics before and after the switch. What Globe Runner discovered is that moving to a new TLD very likely contributed to Eric’s site appearing at the top of many search results.

The legal industry sees some of the highest CPC rates, but Eric’s experience can be duplicated for other products and services, too. The takeaway for any company looking to market themselves online is that SEM isn’t the only route to take, and in many cases, doesn’t represent the best bang for your buck, either. Many will find that putting the domain name (and new TLDs) at the center of their strategy will drive traffic and search engine rankings without breaking the bank every month on costly PPC campaigns.

How the Use of Sub-Domains Can Harm Your Search Rankings - Search Engine Watch

How the Use of Sub-Domains Can Harm Your Search Rankings - Search Engine Watch | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
A common theme behind these issues lies in communication (or lack of it) between departments. For example, the team creating content for Old Navy's menswear section may well be completely separate from Gap's.

This means they are creating content without any idea that they are competing with their own website, not just those of rival retailers.

In general, only one site will rank for each term on Google, so Gap needs to decide which of the two to prioritise, or perhaps to reconsider the strategy of using sub-domains.

What is needed in each case is a co-ordinated strategy and these departments need to communicate with each other.

Individual examples may seem trivial, but if this internal conflict is happening across a broad range of keywords it can have a serious effect for businesses.

Search-Driven Microsites in Brand gTLDs – Top Trend for 2015 - ClickZ

Search-Driven Microsites in Brand gTLDs – Top Trend for 2015 - ClickZ | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Why are the new gTLDs ideal for microsites?

Completely blank canvas.

Guaranteed use and availability.

Easy to remember so you don’t need search.

SEO likely to generate better results if they get to you by search.

Perfectly balances with apps and other mobile experiences. Microsites in new top-level domains also balance out well with apps and mobile experiences. If you think about what you use apps to do – perform one specific function – then creating microsites that essentially do the same thing is an easy way to translate that experience onto the personal computer experience.

Can create different microsites for different targeted customers. What’s so great about having your own TLD is that you can build out microsites that essentially sell the same product but to different targeted audiences.

Easiest way to start using the brand gTLD.

Microsites died, but this is a pretty good argument for a microsite-Lazarus driven by gTLDs. Very smart, and should be considered!

Google Domains: New Domain Registration Service Launches - Search Engine Watch

Google Domains: New Domain Registration Service Launches - Search Engine Watch | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Excerpt...

Google has announced the launch of a new domain registration service. Called Google Domains, it is being launched as an invite-only beta for both new domain registrations and domain transfers.

While Google itself isn't offering any website building tools, they've partnered with several website building companies, including Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, and Shopify, in order to provide full services for domain buying customers.

The Next Domain Gold Rush: What You Need to Know - Moz | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

The Next Domain Gold Rush: What You Need to Know - Moz | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Late last year, a swath of new TLDs went on sale for a cool $185K each. What you might not know is that many of those TLDs are about to be resold as publicly available domains. Here's what you need to know about the coming domain gold rush.

Intermediate/ Excerpt...

When do the new domains go on sale?

The first group of domains began their sunrise period on November 26, 2013, and it ends on January 24, 2014. After that, additional domains will come into play in small groups, throughout the year. To find out about any particular domain/TLD, your best bet is to use a service like Name.com's TLD watch-list, which sends status notifications about specific domains you're interested in. Your own registrar of choice may have a similar service. The specifics of any given TLD will vary.

How much will the new domains cost?

Unfortunately, it depends. Each TLD can be priced differently, and even within a TLD, some domains may go for a premium rate. A few TLDs will probably be auction-based and not fixed-price. Use a watch-list tool or investigate your domains of choice individually.

What kind of a land grab can we expect?

With over 500 TLDs in play over the course of months, it's nearly impossible to say. Some domains, like .attorney, will clearly be competitive in local markets, and you can expect a gold rush mentality. Other domains, like .guru may be popular for vanity URLs. Regional and niche domains, like .okinawa or .rodeo are going to have a smaller audience. Then there are wildcards, like .ninja, that are really anyone's guess.

What Cookies, Hummingbird & gTLDs Mean for Digital Marketers in 2014 - ClickZ | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

What Cookies, Hummingbird & gTLDs Mean for Digital Marketers in 2014 - ClickZ | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Not only are digital marketers grappling with new social media sites popping up daily, they also face new challenges to integrate mobile apps, messaging and track data across platforms. CMOs have more to manage than ever before.

Advanced/ Condensed...

The new gTLDs are launching and will start to have an impact in 2014. What's so interesting about the unique opportunities the gTLDs provide is that it is happening during this time of digital transformation. Unlike the .com boom of the 1990s where .com was the only game in town (and no one really knew how to use a domain, nor the potential of the internet), the new gTLDs are launching during a data boom with new sophisticated technologies changing the way marketers think about their strategies as they respond to accelerating consumer adoption in a rapidly changing global marketplace.

For marketers with content, this is a good thing, but for those relying on old SEO strategies with the emphasis on keywords, the cost to drive eyeballs to the site may have just gone up with Hummingbird in charge of quality control. Hummingbird will look for content that is good, dynamic and related to what the searcher is seeking -- like a human researcher might do.

Another big change in digital is in the use of cookies. While cookies have long been a tool marketers relied upon to track consumers, the big players such as Microsoft, Facebook, Google and others are quickly moving away from cookies and into their own technology to track consumers across platforms. This valuable data, of course, comes at a cost to advertisers. While advertisers are used to shelling out money for this data, the impact will be felt by the Ad Tech industry, which has relied heavily upon cookies for data.

The sheer scale and number of new top level domains entering the root of the internet coupled with Hummingbird's search for good content will mean that authentic domains in new TLDs related to their content and business category will likely rank higher in organic search.

Three Myths About the New Web Domains Coming This Fall - AdAge | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

Three Myths About the New Web Domains Coming This Fall - AdAge | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Excerpt...

Myth #1: This will take forever. More than 1,000 new domains will launch. Won't I need to submit each one separately?

The Trademark Clearinghouse offers a one-stop global source of registered trademarks. This includes trademarks written in multiple languages and even non-Latin scripts. In the past, brands had to individually record trademarks with each domain. Now they can make just one submission to the Trademark Clearinghouse.

Myth #2: I see no benefit to submitting my trademarks to the clearinghouse. There is no way of telling if I will be protected.

Here is how brands will be protected:

The Sunrise Period. Before the open launch of any new domain name space to the general public, a "sunrise period" will give brand owners a chance to secure domain names that match their trademarks ahead of everyone else.

Trademark Claims System. After each new web extension launches, trademark holders will receive alerts warning them if someone else registers a domain name that matches their mark or marks. Brand owners can then deal with trademark infringement early on, and on the sure footing that the domain-name registrant was warned of the existence of the relevant trademark/s before registering.

Myth #3. The first new domain hasn't launched yet, so there is no rush to enter my trademarks.

While there is no deadline for submitting a trademark to the Clearinghouse, brands should submit their trademarks as early as possible, ensuring time for dealing with potential administrative issues, including delays that could lead to missing out on one or more "sunrise" periods. You don't get charged until the first sunrise.
