Google: Leave Your Authorship Markup On Your Page - Search Engine Land

Google: Leave Your Authorship Markup On Your Page - Search Engine Land | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
But to everyone’s surprise, Gary Illyes (from Google) told the audience to keep authorship live in your source code. The question surprised Danny Sullivan, the founding editor of Search Engine Land, and most of the audience.

I am pretty sure John Mueller from Google told webmasters it was safe to remove the authorship markup from their sites. But now Gary Illyes is saying to keep it.

Why keep it? Gary said that you never know when the Google search team may want to start using it again. Yes, that is a head-scratcher.

Three Good Reasons Why Google Authorship Still Matters - Profs

Three Good Reasons Why Google Authorship Still Matters - Profs | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Excerpt...

But there are three good reasons to still use Authorship. They all relate to visibility.

•  Author pictures are still there in personalized results. Anyone who is logged in and hasn't turned off personalized search results will see your picture and byline, as long they've added you to a circle.

•  Drive traffic to your Google+ profile. Creating another path from Google search to a social profile is a good thing.

•  Author authority may eventually affect rankings. Google patented the ability to use author information as a ranking factor way back in 2005 in the now-famous "Author Rank" patent. It seems committed to using author information to determine quality. Statements from Google indicate that connecting authors to content is still its goal.

Google Kills Authorship, Photos and All - HubSpot

Google Kills Authorship, Photos and All - HubSpot | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Google Authorship is over. According to a Google+ post yesterday by Google Webmaster Tools' John Mueller, Google is removing authorship results from search and won't be tracking the rel=author tag data anymore (it'll be treated like any other type of markup on your website, and "won't cause problems," according to Mueller). In Mueller's post, he says the reason Google Authorship is getting the boot is because of users. Apparently it wasn't that helpful for users, and even ended up distracting them. And according to their tests, "removing Authorship generally does not seem to reduce traffic to sites. Nor does it increase clicks on ads."

Should You Still Care About Google Authorship? - ClickZ

Should You Still Care About Google Authorship? - ClickZ | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Should I Give Up on Google Authorship?

The short answer is no. Authorship is still important, especially for those looking to establish themselves as a thought leader in their space (and what savvy business person isn't striving to do just that?). Authorship should be one piece of your overall digital strategy, which should also include creating and publishing original content, providing value to your customers and other online users, increasing awareness, and establishing relationships with users and influencers.

This change was written on the walls. Google already started reducing the size and results of lesser-known authors months ago. Referred to as "second-class authorship" by Mark Traphagen, these authors aren't known experts in their field, but they had correctly implemented authorship and were creating original content.

Content Creators Ranking Checklist: How Quality Scores Influence - Search Engine Watch

Content Creators Ranking Checklist: How Quality Scores Influence - Search Engine Watch | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

A few companies have developed authorship ranking tools that analyze content creators beyond what Google does. One company, Virante, looks at Google Authorship scores with a tool called Authorrank.org, the diversity of sites on which a writer appears, volume, link value, and a few other items.

ClearVoice, which hit the market this month, takes this a step further and developed a scoring tool based on authorship power that weighs how often an author posts, the quality of posts, the relevancy of the domains that carry the posts, and each article's social visibility. This tool indexed the top 80,000 sites on the Web, more than 90,000 content creators, and more than 21 million posts to come up with a way of measuring the publication power of a particular online author.

Here is a checklist for making sure that you’re following the right steps for authorship:

-- >  Are you a verified writer? Test your content on Google’s rich snippet testing tool and see how it should display in search engines. Make sure there’s proper rel=author markup.

-- >  Make the connection more directly. If you were linking from your Google+ profile to a bio on your site, try linking to the specific posts instead. Forget rel=me and go with rel=author.

-- >  Markup your Twitter profile. Include tags like: meta[@name='twitter:creator'], tag @href on your profile URL, and/or @rel is "author."

-- >  Is your authorship actually marked up? Verify it against ClearVoice.com, which indexes long-form content that is properly marked-up on Google+ and Twitter.

-- >  Are you on WordPress? Download Google Authorship and social metadata plug-ins to usher you along.

-- >  Continue writing and optimizing. Make sure the content you produce from here on out is Twitter and Google optimized.

What Is The True Value Of Google And Twitter Authorship? - Forbes

What Is The True Value Of Google And Twitter Authorship? - Forbes | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Why Adopt To Google Authorship?

1. Google Rewards Real People: As Google develops its algorithm to become hyper-personalized and contextually relevant, we’ll continue to see rankings favor towards real content producers that are subject matter experts in a particular area.

2. Authorship Gives Your Content More Visibility: Unlike even a few years ago when Google’s search results page was purely text-based, todays rich snippets that Google displays in search results display metadata in the form of an author image, byline and content blurb.

Where Do you Start?

If you’re not a technical person, authorship can leave your brain spinning. Luckily, there are tools and tricks out there that makes this process easier.

1. Make sure that your Google authorship is set up. Follow the steps here.

2. Leverage third-party tools to validate your authorship. A new platform called ClearVoice gives a public view into the content creator’s ranking power through an algorithm which includes a comprehensive body of published works, aggregate social shares of their content, topic analysis, and more. Here you can find your profile based on an index of 80,000+ online authors, claim your content, and even learn how to apply or improve correct authorship.

3. Check your code. [Click through to the post for the code.]

What if Author Rank Never Happens? [Update] - Copyblogger | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Excerpt...

-- >  Authorship is the way Google knows who the creator of a piece of content is, no matter which site that content resides on.

-- >  Author Rank is the idea – supported by patents filed by Google – that who creates a page of content (and links out from that page), based on their historical reputation for creating content people actually like, would become one of the signals Google relies on when ranking relevant results of a particular topic.

-- >  Google+ is a massive topical network (as opposed to a traditional social network) that provides Google with direct data about what people like and share when it comes to content on the web.

Google Announces the End of Author Photos in Search: What You Should Know - Moz

Google Announces the End of Author Photos in Search: What You Should Know - Moz | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

As of June 29th, the MozCast feature graph shows traditional authorship snippets dropping to 0% of search results across all data centers. Previously, Google displayed authorship photos in 22% of all searches. Going forward, Google plans to only display the author's name in the search snippet, dropping the photo and the circle count.

Is Google Authorship still worth it?

For many, scoring photos in search results was the only incentive people had to verify authorship. Whether or not it increased click-through rates, it was an ego boost, and it was great to show clients. With the photos gone, it's likely fewer people will work to get verified. Even with the photos gone, there is still ample reason to verify authorship, and I highly recommend you continue to do so.

-- >  Even though a byline is much less visible than a photo, across the hundreds or thousands of search impressions you receive each day, those bylines can make a measurable difference in your traffic, and may improve your online visibility.

-- >  Google continues to work on promoting authoritative authors in search results, and authorship is one of the better ways for Google to establish "identity" on the web. Google continues to make statements explaining how important identity in content is, as explained by Matt Cutts both publicly and in this rarely seen interview.

Google Removes Authorship Photos and Google+ Circle Counts From Search Results - HubSpot

Google Removes Authorship Photos and Google+ Circle Counts From Search Results - HubSpot | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Digest...

Google's getting rid of author profile pictures and Google+ circle counts on desktop and mobile search. Since the news is fresh and doesn't appear to have taken effect just yet, marketers haven't reacted, though I anticipate a renewed fixation on dominating the top three spots. Ranking high in Google search will always be important, but with Google's more recent algorithm changes, we have to remember that we can't hack our way to the top. You've got to continue to create content that helps people -- not robots. This update is confusing and potentially frustrating, but you'll survive okay if you're focusing on pleasing people first.

Things You Need to Know about Google+ - Kapost | #TheMarketingTechAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Intermediate/ Digest...

Google+ is about to undergo some changes, as 8-year veteran Vic Gundotra is leaving the company. Replacing Gundotra is David Besbris, Vice President of Engineering at Google, described by some Googlers as as “Vic’s right-hand man.”

As Google shifts G+ away from a product and into more of a platform, several sources believe Google images will be one of the primary marketing features to survive the new Google structure.

Despite the shuffle of over 1,000 G+ employees who are dispersing across various Google campuses—primarily into mobile and Chrome departments—Besbris’ appointment and Google’s statement suggest something similar to Google+ will likely live on.

Lee Odden, CEO at TopRank Online Marketing, says the new Google+ should be approached in the same way all online, digital, and social platforms are approached:

“Like many tools, Google+ is what you make of it. For some that means hangouts and video creation for cross-posting to YouTube will be the most useful. For others, it means being able to share content and send messages directly to curated Circles of target audiences will prove the most useful. SEOs will be Google+ fans as long as Authorship enhances search results with author avatars and links get crawled from Google+ shares to their websites,” Odden said in an email to Kapost.

Google Cuts Authorship in Search Results by 20-40% - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingTechAlert

Google Cuts Authorship in Search Results by 20-40% - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingTechAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Getting your face on Google's search results pages via authorship is getting harder. New authorship algorithms aim to display photos for authors Google considers relevant and interesting and cut down on pictures of lesser quality authors.

Expert/ Digest...

In mid-December, Google rolled out new authorship algorithms designed to display authorship for what they consider relevant and interesting authors, Google has confirmed to Search Engine Watch: “We made some minor updates. We had been showing author information whenever we could based on authorship markup, email verification, and other signals of authorship on the web. In mid-December, we rolled out new algorithms designed to show author photos when they're more likely to be relevant and interesting. (For example, the algorithms now try to estimate the quality of documents an author typically writes).”

Authorship is also going to put a greater emphasis on high quality content, so that authors that write higher-quality content are more likely to have their authorship with image displayed. Said Google:

“If an author typically writes high quality content, that author is more likely to be relevant to you.”

Google has also become more strict with the conditions for when they will display authorship. If you are using authorship for a WordPress-based site and use Yoast's SEO for WordPress plug-in, the default setting is turned on for posts, pages, and media, but Google recommends that you use rel=author on posts only.

Until this is updated, you will want to ensure that you only have rel=author for posts checked. If you use WordPress and saw authorship removed completely, it could be the issue.

How to Improve SEO with Google Authorship - TechWyse | #TheMarketingTechAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Has your brand taken advantage of the Google Authorship program yet? If not, you're missing out on a powerful way to increase your visibility, establish yourself as an authority, and get some special treatment with Google as a bonus.

Advanced/ Digest...

1. Rich snippets are eye-catching.

Rich snippets make your content stand out on a search results page, and visibility leads to clicks.

2. Click-throughs are increased.

As we just said, greater visibility does help boost click-through rates, but it’s not just pure visibility that gets those clicks. It’s the sense of trust that readers feel by seeing a name and a face attached to content.

3. Your brand gains instant credibility.

When you have a headshot right next to your search results listing, your company immediately stands out from all the other faceless entities.

4. Your content gets indexed faster.

If your content is of a timely nature, getting it indexed quickly is critical. Google Authorship gives priority to content that’s linked to a Google+ profile, giving it a significant advantage in the race to the top of the search results page.

5. Google Authorship levels the playing field.

When Google Authorship is in the mix, it doesn’t matter as much exactly where your content ranks on the search results page. Being 6th or 7th on the list isn’t as big of an issue when your content comes in the form of an eye-catching rich snippet.

Google Authorship: 1 Completely Unscientific Experiment + 13 Killer Resources - Portent | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Expert/ Excerpt...

Google … unleashed a series of game-changing algorithm changes to combat content and links created merely to game the system. Game over, man, game over.

What’s Authorship got to do with all of this? First of all, it centers on linking to your Google+ profile; now you may think Google+ is a social network and just designed to compete with Facebook. I did when it first came out too.

Sure, it is a social network but it’s much more than that – I highly, highly recommend you read more about that here as soon as you can, but for now, you could simply think of it the way Mike Arnesen puts it when he talks about the possibility of AuthorRank – I’m paraphrasing what I heard him say in a presentation at an SEMpdx workshop, but it went something like “Google Plus is really an identity verification system.”

The 'New SEO' is Plain Old Marketing - SearchEngineWatch | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

The 'New SEO' is Plain Old Marketing - SearchEngineWatch | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
Sometimes moving forward means going all the way back to the beginning. Even if the SEO tricks are dying out the, technical aspects like speed, structure and optimized hierarchy still matter; the definition of SEO isn't shrinking, but expanding.

Expert/ Digest...

To quote my boss, links used to be the “800 pound gorilla in the room” when it came to rankings. Now, links may still be a sizable primate, but they’re not all that matters.  Links matter. Technical SEO still matters (yes even though certain short cuts may be shut down, SEO is still alive and kicking), authorship is coming into play; in-depth articles have gotten their own schema. Then there are Social signals that can't be counted out, user data like CTR, return visitors aka customer loyalty, pogo sticking, and of course, his highness, king content that all factor in.

A part of the new world of SEO is as basic as going to our marketing roots. There’s no way that building relationships through networks is going to bring you more search engine traffic as quickly as 200 directory links did three years ago. Expecting the same results from the old techniques or new ones is only going to lead to a lot of giving up on things that “seem” like they aren’t working. We need to change our expectations. We have to stop thinking about search engines as something we can still manipulate to avoid more traditional forms of marketing. The only difference is the way we leverage those techniques from a technical standpoint to bring the maximum benefit.

CYDigital/marteq.io's insight:

SEO is NOT dead...just different...with lower results. And it will continue to change so that links, etc., will lose they're value. Focus on the content, the authorship, the social building, the basics. Tackle the SEO and content optimization after you get the engine humming.

Brad Tollefsen's curator insight, September 8, 2014 9:36 AM

There may have been a time when links could push you forward in spite of these other factors. But the new math isn't; old links plus more links equals winning. There are more constants, more variables, the occasional exponent, some parentheses, and no scientific calculators to make it all easier. We have to do it the hard way.

4 Pro Tools To Maximize Google Authorship - Social Metrics Pro | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
We are big fans of Google Authorship. Heck, who doesn’t love seeing a smiling face associated with search results? Plus, it helps our search engine optimization(...)

Advanced/ Digest...

Luckily, there are some great tools (beyond Google Authorship) which are incredibly helpful. These four are our favorite:

1. Google’s Structured Data Tool

Structured Data refers to the information which Google is able to learn about your site by crawling it. This information directly correlates to how our websites perform in search results. The more information Google is able to garner, the higher our search rankings.

2. SEOPressor WordPress Plugin

The dashboard is easy to use and plugins give us the specialized functions we want. It allows us to easily and seamlessly authorize every one of our posts, no matter how many blogs we manage.

3. Author Stats within Google’s Webmaster Tools

Google’s Author Stats give us another level of comprehensive information about how our own verified content is performing. You will be able to see how your articles are ranking and how many click-throughs you have received. You will be able to see which articles are actually displaying your picture because not all do. And, you will be able to view which articles have been attributed to you which should not have been.

4. Google+ Ripples

We know a successful web presence is based in building relationships. It is accomplished through engagement. Google+ Ripples allows us to see who is sharing our content and where they are sharing it. It lets us target our audience specifically.

3 Reasons You Need to Implement Google Authorship now - OMI | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

3 Reasons You Need to Implement Google Authorship now - OMI | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
If you create content online, you need to use Google Authorship and Google Plus. Here are 3 reasons why you need to add Google Authorship to your website.

Digest...

1. Maximize search visibility

Google users rarely spend more than a few seconds scanning the results from their search. Most click the top result because it requires least amount of effort. How do you stop users from simply clicking that first result? Draw attention with Google Authorship.

2. Increase click through rates

Without authorship, more than two-thirds of Google searchers click the top ranked search result. No surprise there.

3. It’s a competitive advantage

While many leaders in search and digital marketing have been stressing the importance of Google Plus and Authorship for years, according to research by BlueGlass, only 3.5% of the Fortune 100 actively use it.  Get your strategy set now. The sooner you develop your strategy and start implementing it, the longer it will take for your competitors to catch up.

Authorship finally comes to fruition...for new in-depth SERPs - Brafton | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

Key excerpt...

Marketers rejoice! The day is finally here that Google will actually reward sites using Authorship markup for their branded content with prime SERP real estate. Separate from the rumored AuthorRank, which would theoretically give domains higher rankings for crediting their esteemed authors, this update simply prioritizes pages using Authorship when selecting domains for its new in-depth articles section. Indeed, Google is bringing a fresh element to SERPs that aims to provide internet users with broad information.

How to Use Facebook Open Graph - Duct Tape Marketing | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

How to Use Facebook Open Graph - Duct Tape Marketing | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
SEO, Content and Social Media are so related these days that site owners need to grab every advantage they can to wring the most out of their efforts.

Digest...

Facebook Open Graph

Since this is the foundation for all three of the plays I’m suggesting, let’s start here. The good news is that for WordPress users, plugins have been built that make all the coding aspects of these tactics very, very simple. I recommend that every WordPress Site owner install the WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast. For non WordPress folks you can read the Facebook Open Graph implementation instructions here.

Twitter Cards

The implementation is pretty straightforward and the documentation pretty useful. Once you’ve set the meta data up on your site or page you do have to get validated and approved for the card types you wish to use. Simply go to the validator and click on the validate and approve tab and put in the URL for blog post. The tool will check for the OG code and allow you to submit. Twitter says it takes 2-4 weeks for approval, but when I submitted it took about 5 minutes.

Google Authorship

Google allows content producers to link their site and Google+ profile to content they produce. This includes content you write on your site and content you contribute to other sites. Simply add all the sites you contribute to in your Google+ profile to get this additional feature started. (it may take months to actually start showing up in search, so do it today!)

CYDigital/marteq.io's insight:

A bit in the weeds, but you get the point. For the B2B marketer, focus on Twitter first, then Authorship. Remember the earlier scoop: do not use Authorship on product pages.

Can Google Authorship Really Cause a Huge Traffic Drop? [Case Study] - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

Can Google Authorship Really Cause a Huge Traffic Drop? [Case Study] - Search Engine Watch | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

One site owner claimed that adding Google authorship caused a drop in traffic and removing authorship triggered a Google retaliation in the form of an even more dramatic traffic drop. Is this possible, or could there be another "smoking gun"?

Digest...

Alex Yumashev created quite a stir with his claim that Google authorship decreased his traffic by 90 percent. He certainly got my attention, as I had recently spoken at a conference as a proponent of authorship and had also written "Google+: A Quick Start Guide" to help people get started with authorship.

The question remains: are their cases where authorship does more harm than good? I left a comment at the end of the Yumashev post that a key takeaway could be that "authorship and product pages aren't always a good match."

This hypothesis was both challenged and supported by other commenters weighing in. I have had the same debate when talking about this publicly. My conference speaking partner, Jim Rudnick agreed with me – product pages and authorship don't mix. Many conference attendees, including the moderator did not see it that way. I would love to find data on CTR by page type to put this argument to rest.

CYDigital/marteq.io's insight:

I've touted Google Authorship, but there's evidence that using Authorship on product pages does more harm than good. Use Authorship on content-related pages!
