Using hashtags helps you increase your LinkedIn reach and get your updates in front of people outside your immediate LinkedIn network without needing to be connected, get comments, or get likes on your status updates. This raises brand awareness on LinkedIn for your company and your personal brand.

When you visit LinkedIn and type any hashtag into the search bar, you will get a list of relevant people, companies, groups, and posts. Technically, you could also search for jobs with that hashtag, but I haven’t seen many job descriptions using hashtags (yet!).

#SocialSelling is one of the hashtags I use frequently because it’s what I want to be known for. After adding that hashtag to my LinkedIn summary, I now appear in the top ten for social selling on LinkedIn. I also have the term “social selling” woven throughout my headline and profile, so that also improves my LinkedIn search results.

Hashtag trademarking rises 64% in one year - Marketing Tech News

A memorable and well-timed hashtag can be the difference between a well-received campaign and one that peters out without much notice. It is perhaps unsurprising then, that a growing number of brands are turning to trademark law to stop others building off their past success.

There has been a 64% global growth in the trademarking of hashtags since 2016, according to trademark research company CompuMark. The first application to trademark a hashtag was made in 2010. Since then there have been over 5,000 applications of which 2,200 were in 2016.

The new feature, seen by The Wall Street Journal in the Twitter app for iOS, added an expanded label to some hashtag searches such as #tbt (Throwback Thursday), #smh (Shaking My Head) or #oitnb (TV series “Orange Is The New Black”). The labeling gives the hashtags a sense of legitimacy and order as related to a certain event or subject.

 

It wasn’t clear how these labels were generated. Some included an option for users to rate their accuracy. Many hashtags, such as #MH17 for Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, didn’t trigger the feature. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on the supposed new feature.

An actiontag is a hashtag that triggers a response. For example, rather than just posting "We have a #NewProduct!" a brand can post "We have a #NewProduct! RT if you #want more information about it."

Here are three of the benefits of using actiontags in your social marketing campaigns:

  -- >  Participation via actiontags. When consumers express their interest in or support for something using actiontags like #want, #buy or #enter, they are explicitly—and publicly—raising their hand. That kind of social opt-in gives the brand an opportunity to respond directly and capitalize on that intent.

  -- >  Automated brand messaging. With automated messaging, a big brand now has the ability to reach out to each and every person who has raised their hand to be apart of a campaign that they have created. That allows brands to cost-effectively engage consumers one on one, opening up new marketing and conversion opportunities.

  -- >  Built-in amplification. Most social posts and messages are buried among thousands of others and have a difficult time elevating above the noise without a significant paid budget behind them. However, using an actiontag in your post creates built-in amplification—since the message spreads organically every time a consumer takes action on it.
