  • Take a disciplined approach to staying at the forefront of technology. Most have a list of trusted publications and bloggers they read regularly and commit a portion of every day to research and reading — as much as 25 percent
  • Leverage their peer networks and reach out often to see what their colleagues are testing and looking at
  • Attend conferences to extend their peer networks and hear the latest from vendors and other marketers about the new tools available.  Note: many of these technologists work to acquire speaking slots at these events as a way of defraying costs. If you speak at a conference most conference organizers will comp you with a free pass
  • Keep diligent records of tools they have discovered, tested and used. One of my close colleagues has a spreadsheet that documents every tool she has used, tested or vendor she’s talked to, for the last 15 years
  • Proactively identify tools to test in the near term, as well as for the next quarter, next year or for a particular project that they anticipate kicking off
  • Gather as much information as they can when they spot a new tool, and look to find any analyst commentary or peer reviews.

What It Means to Be a Technical Marketer? It can mean two things:
  1. Knowing front-end web development, equipped with SQL, R, or Python to analyze and clean data like never before, or understand data heavy tools like Google Adwords and Google Analytics.
  2. Being armed with technical knowledge to understand how different marketing software work, how the integrations are executed, and what is happening behind the scenes.
Number two is really important to start, and that’s where I advise. Especially with the trend of “Data Science,” I’m sure a ton of marketers are trying to learn R or Python. With those skills, you can analyze clean Excel exports, but how do you free yourself from that shackle? Grab Twitter data through its API and analyze within Python and even update it automatically.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is “a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than is accurate.” Ouch. Why? They have “a metacognitive inability to recognize their [own] ineptitude.” In other words, incompetents have a double trouble: “not only do they reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the ability to realize it.” Perhaps the best way to understand the Dunning-Kruger Effect is to remember that we all see the world through our eyes: everything we perceive is processed through our self-perception.

Optimistic people live in an optimistic world. And vice versa.

As a marketer, if you believe you’re falling behind and others are more adept at programmatic advertising or multitouch attribution or using the SnapChat API, you may be giving them credit for your own knowledge. As Dunning and Kruger themselves conclude, the only way to really know where you stand is to score yourself against a set of objective criteria and benchmark the results.
