The Truth About B2B Marketing And The Social Media Platforms You Need - Marketing Insider Group

The Truth About B2B Marketing And The Social Media Platforms You Need - Marketing Insider Group | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
So what is the best platform for B2B, and how can you be successful on any of these platforms?

  • Do the research into not only which platforms your buyers are spending the most time on, but also how they use those platforms in the context of how they work vs. how they play.
  • Identify how the “top performing brands” on that platform are engaging with it, and understand what they are doing right.
  • Focus your resources on developing a presence on the top 1-2 platforms your buyers are spending time on.
  • Accept the fact that most buyers (unless your research has discovered otherwise) are only looking to social media for high-level, introductory research into the solutions for their problems.
  • Understand that “building a presence” involves more than simply posting blog articles or white papers, and try to create an unbiased source of educational information to serve the needs of the buyer.
  • Also understand that a paid advertisement might sometimes be the best way to get your helpful article shared by the right people.
  • Measure your performance based on the specific platform, and learn from what you find.
  • Optimize your platform presence based on the content that works for that platform, and understand that what works for your audience may vary from platform to platform.
  • Cut bait and try something different if it doesn’t work.

The author of this article raises very interesting points. First off though, the fact that Facebook is the number one social media platform should not be surprising even if it is in the context of business to business marketing. Facebook has been constantly evolving to fit every need of all its users in all contexts. Facebooks interface is much more detailed in how you build your profile and in recent years allowed businesses to conduct business right from their page. The author also talks about how there are numerous social media website and applications that you need to research in order to effectively market to another business. The important thing I think he brings up is how apps like snapchat can be important. In my experience businesses I have worked at choose to focus all their energy on Facebook or twitter exclusively. In cases like this I would agree with the author in saying that that may be a mistake in many cases. I believe the key to retain attention with your online presence is continuous content creation that is personable. If you look at businesses that focus on online presence like video game team organizations (not video game companies) such as Faze Clan and Optic gaming you will notice that their success is based on the content they produce rather than their competitive winnings. If you are unfamiliar with these types of organizations it is worthwhile to look into the world of eSports and video game content creation. These organizations use their exposure as a competitive video game team as a launching pad to make money from streaming their gameplay, and creating YouTube videos and in doing so make hundreds of thousands of dollars just for essentially marketing themselves well online. I’m not saying the marketers of B2B business should go as far as to stream everything they do, however I believe that taking a cue from YouTubers can be helpful. I believe that the successes I mentioned demonstrate that social media platforms allows your business to interact with buyers and customers on a more personable level which I think could be a major factor in the success of social media marketing.

Social Media in business is a great way to engage your current and future clients to build a relationship and trust ready for when they want to do business with you. The question is which social media? Just because your competitor has a facebook page, doesn't mean you should have one. Where is your client? Where are they getting information that will influence business decisions?

Jane Horwood's curator insight, August 14, 2014 4:27 AM

In order to decide which are the best social media networks to use, you need to know your target audience. Otherwise you could end up talking to yourself.
